Brief History:- Ordnance Factory, Dehradun was created as a result of the decision to shift the Mathematical Instruments Office, 15 Wood Street, Kolkata in 1941, in order to establish a factory specialized in the production of Military Optical Instruments.
At a Glance:-Ordnance Factory Dehradun popularly known as OFD, is located amongst picturesque surroundings on the foothills of the Shivalik, near the village Raipur, 5km East of Dehradun. This factory was established in the year 1943, as one of the units of the Ordnance Factory Board,Kolkata working under the department of Defence Production, Ministry of Defence.
OFD has grown in leaps and bounds fulfilling the long cherished aspirations of the Indian psyche to achieve excellence in optical instruments manufactured for Defence, para-military forces, sister factories etc.
To meet multi-disciplinary requirements for the products of the factory, OFD can be categorized broadly under the following heads:
Facilities have been created for manufacture of high precision mechanical components using CNC machines, Electroplating, Painting and powder coating. Factory also has a tool room for the manufacture of various tooling, jigs, Fixtures, equipment etc.
This group manufactures various types of lenses, prisms and mirrors required for optical instruments. Facilities for manufacture of such precision optical components have been set up including graticule production and anti-reflection coatings.
The group assembles opto-mechanical,electro optical and night vision instruments.
A team of highly dedicated quality control personnel is functioning for ensuring quality right from incoming material to the final output. Facilities for quality control are set up including environmental testing, thermal shock, vibration, impact etc.
The factory employs a total work force around 1200 including officers, staff & workmen and is headed by the General Manager.
