About Us

History

During early 1980s Government of India, MOD, Research & Development organization (DRDO) planned to set up a Heavy Alloy Penetrator Project, with an integrated manufacturing facility, for production of anti tank kinetic energy projectiles of various calibers. This ammunition is a nightmare for the enemy and has got the capability to destabilize the enemies Battle Tank by sheer Kinetic energy. Besides kinetic energy projectiles, HAPP is also engaged in the manufacture of various Tungsten Alloy based components for Civil Trade.

The factory is located in a rural setting and is about 21 KM away from Tiruchirappalli Railway station and 17 Km away from the Airport. The factory is well connected to the Tiruchirappalli town by road. HAPP has production facilities for processing heavy metallic powders under controlled Hydrogen atmosphere, preparation of green compacts, sintering & vacuum heat treatment. Machining and assembly operations are carried out under controlled atmospheric conditions. The factory possesses state-of-the art facilities for machining and multi gauging.

The factory laboratory is well equipped with Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, Gas Determinator, Scanning Electron Microscope, Optical Microscope, Universal Testing Machine, Particle Size Analyser and many other facilities. Since it inception, HAPP has been assisting Armament Research & Development Establishment, Pune and Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory, Hyderabad in the development of latest version of Kinetic energy projectiles.

Products

The factory produces 400 tonne per annum home-made tungsten based heavy alloy components through powder metallurgy processes to manufacture FSAPDS (Fin Stabilized Armor Piercing Discarding Sabot), alternatively called the APFSDS, which is a high kinetic energy weapon used in tank and other armor-piercing ammunition, supplied to Indian Army.

Geography

The project factory is set up separately from the township that houses the employees working in the project. The township is a part of the project and is adequately equipped for meeting the daily needs of its residents. There are government quarters for the employees, a small dispensary-cum-hospital, banks and post-office. There are two schools, one of them being a Kendriya Vidyalaya (Central School). There is a small market complex that houses a few shops selling groceries, stationery shops, PCO among others.
