Ordnance Factories are treated as the fourth arm of Defence. High Explosives Factory, Khadki is under Ordnance Factory Board, Kolkata, which comes under the Department of Defence Production in the Ministry of Defence. Chairman Ordnance Factory Board and Director General Ordnance Factories, Kolkata is Head of the Family of Ordnance Factories and operates through various Members /Addl.DGOF's of various divisions at corporate level. General Manager is the Chief Executive Officer of the Factory. At the unit level, General Manager operates, keeping in view the overall corporate policy and objective.
High Explosives Factory, Khadki, Pune is a premier factory in the family of 41 Ordnance Factories. Its corporate office is ORDNANCE FACTORY BOARD located at KOLKATA. Major production at High Explosives Factory started during 1942-44. The factory is engaged in the manufacture of High Explosives viz TNT, DNT, 'G' Fuel , Slab Demolition, CE Primer, Oxidiser (RFNA), Hand Granade Tetryl, PEK-1 ( Plastic Explosive ), Hexa Nitro Stilbene, Lead Styphnate, Lead Azide, Mercury Fulminate, Tetrazene, Detonator
HEF was planned as a separate unit in the Pre-World war-II years, 1935-40 for manufacture of high explosives (TNT & CE) and Initiators required for AFK. Its foundation stone was laid on January 11, 1940 by Sir G.S. Butlar, the then director of Ordnance Factories. Since it's inception, It has been playing a major role in defence preparedness of our country.
Location : Western bank of Mula river at a site where the "Battle of Khadki" was fought between the valiant Marathas and British army in 1817.
